Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) coming and going

2024 was a very active year with over 700 new ETFs created - some with very narrow focus areas. Also, in 2024, over 200 ETFs were liquidated and closed. That's the most newly opened and closed fund ever. With over 3900 US-listed ETFs, standing out and achieving success is becoming increasingly challenging. At the same time, it's easier than ever to create an ETF.
Defined outcome ETFs are growing in numbers with several different styles and sponsors. Defined outcome ETFs include:
- Buffer
- Barrier
- Defined income
The common feature is reducing the range of possible outcomes - both upside and downside. Defined outcome ETFs are gaining significant interest due to recent market volatility and may be suitable for certain investors based on their goals and risk tolerance.
